Prehnite Gemstone Steling Silver Necklaces

Prehnite gemstone sterling silver necklacesThe gemstone Prehnite was named for its discoverer, Colonel Hendrik von Prehn (1733-1785), a Dutch mineralogist and an early governor of the Cape of Good Hope colony. Prehnite was also the very first mineral to be named and described from South Africa, long before South Africa became an important source for precious stones.

This gemstone is a hydrated calcium aluminum silicate that occurs in a soft yellow-green to apple-green color. Many of them have an intriguing luminous quality. Prehnite is a medium-hard gem with a rating of 6 to 6.5 on the Mohs scale. (the Mohs scale of minerals hardness characterizes the scratch resistance of various gemstones through the ability of a harder material to scratch a softer material)

Prehnite can often be found in large sizes, sometimes as large as 100 carats. It is a relatively inexpensive gem, though higher quality faceted material may sell for prices approximately the same as amethyst or citrine. Generally the faceted material is found only in smaller sizes. It can be found in South Africa, Australia, China, Scotland and the United States.

Prehnite enhances inner knowledge and connects the will and the heart. Known as the Stone of Prophecy, Prehnite has long been used by South African indigenous shamans. It boosts prophetic abilities and it enhances visualization and spiritual “knowing,” and aids in connecting with higher realms, including your higher self as well as spiritual and extraterrestrial beings. Prehnite is considered a stone of unconditional love and the crystal to heal the healer.  It enhances precognition and calms the environment bringing peace and protection.

Black Onyx Gold Plated Silver Earrings

Black Onyx Gold PlatedThese classic black onyx earrings could be found here.

Onyx is a gemstone whose description can have several connotations. Its most accepted gemstone definition describes a solid black Chaledony, or a banded or layered black and white Chalcedony. The term Onyx is occasionally used to described any engraved stone with a solid color base, or it may describe any banded gemstone with parallel banding. In its solid black form, Onyx is the most traditional black gemstone.

Chalcedony is the form of Quartz that is compact and microcrystalline. It occurs in many different forms, colors, and patterns, and many varieties have been used as gemstones since antiquity. In the gemstone trade, the term Chalcedony is often used specifically to describe the white, gray, or blue translucent type of Chalcedony, but its technical term includes all additional varieties.

Onyx is an ancient gemstone, having been used in jewelry and as an ornamental gemstone for carvings since antiquity. It has traditionally been one of the most important engraving and cameo gemstones, where its most common form was a black base with a white upper layer. Although still used a minor gemstone today, the significance and value of Onyx has been diminished as compared to ancient times. When Onyx is banded black and white, it can be jointly classified as both Agate and Onyx. However, many require Onyx to have banding in roughly parallel lines, whereas other forms of Agate can have wavy or concentric forms of banding.
