Swarovski crystals are not natural crystals found in caves, but are man-made gems manufactured in Austria. In the late 1800’s, Daniel Swarovski (October 24, 1862 – January 23, 1956) discovered         a formula for making beautiful, high quality lead glass crystals. Since then, the Swarovski family has continued the tradition of making the most recognized crystals in the world out of their factory in Wattens, a market community in Austria. They perfected the art of cutting the crystal and developed a polishing technique that gives their crystals a transparent and bright reflective quality to the finished product.

Originally, crystal was produced for chandeliers and later stemware. Artisan realized that the beauty and elegance of crystal could be crafted into jewelry such as pendants and earrings. This was the forefront to the industry today where crystal is used to create exquisite jewelry, and Swarovski jewelry it the leader in the market. Waterford, Baccarat Orrefors, Murano Ravenscroft and Hoya are among the most recognized names in crystal. Fine crystal contains lead oxide; twentyfour percent is the highest it can contain and still ensure the brilliance that has made them sought after all over the world. The artisans of the time experimented by adding lead to the glass to be able to change its characteristics. They were able to produce a silvery item that with careful cutting became beautiful crystal.

Crystal dates back to Mesopotamia. Its intended use was for jewelry, pottery, and decorations. It was in its native state and only the aristocracy of the time.

Oxidized Sterling Silver Aquamarine Earrings

Aquamarine Oxidized Sterling Silver EarringsThese lovely blue aquamarine gemstone oxidized sterling silver earrings could be found here.

Aquamarine is a blue to green-blue gemstone, a variety of beryl. The beryl group of minerals is most famous for chromium-rich, green emerald, which happens to be one of the ‘Precious Four’ gems of the world (diamond, sapphire and ruby are the remaining three). Aquamarine varies in color from blue-green to a light sky blue, and for generations, those stones containing green are often heat-treated to remove this less desirable color. Surprisingly, unlike other gemstones, the majority of aquamarines are flawless.

It is most famous for its breathtaking sea-blue colors which can range from light blue to dark blue. Created by combining Latin words for water (aqua) and sea (mare), aquamarine does indeed resemble the bottomless blue of seawater.

Aquamarine is mined primarily in Brazil, Nigeria and Zambia but the leading producer of aquamarine is Brazil, with many mines spread throughout the country. Other deposits of Aquamarine are sourced from Australia, Myanmar (Burma), China, India, Kenya, Madagascar, Mozambique, Namibia, Nigeria, Pakistan, Zambia, Zimbabwe, as well as in several U.S. locations. Karur, India recently has become one of the biggest suppliers of Aquamarine.

Aquamarine is the traditional birthstones for March. As a gift, aquamarine is well known for its legendary abilities to preserve and enhance mutual love, to ensure truth in relationships and to maintain a good marriage. It is a universal symbol of youth, fidelity, hope and health and also symbolizes safety and security, especially within long standing relationships. The healing powers of the aquamarine has been mentioned for centuries by healers, shamans and medicine men. Whether it’s factual or a placebo effect, it truly doesn’t matter as long as it helps people who need it. The safest approach is to wear the gemstone in contact with the skin, especially close to the injured or troubled part of the body. Aquamarine is said to be of help for arthritis, eye inflammation and sore throat.

Ancient Romans believed the magnificent gemstone was sacred to Neptune, the god of the sea. Some legends say that it was gift from mermaids, while others suggest that Neptune retrieved it after it fell from the jewel boxes of sirens and washed onto shore. Early sailors wore aquamarine talismans, engraved with the likeness of Neptune, as protection against dangers at sea. The association with water led to the belief that the Aquamarine was particularly powerful when immersed. Water in which this gemstone had been submerged was used in ancient times to heal a variety of illnesses of the heart, liver, stomach, mouth and throat. Aquamarine is believed to release anger and negativity replacing them with mental peace and clarity, providing emotional and mental balance. It has been used as an aid in meditation and to assist in self-expression. In Antiquity, as well as in the Middle Ages people believed that the cosmos is reflected in gemstones. It is no surprise that aquamarine is assigned to the planet Neptune and is also one of March’s official birthstones.
