Baltic Amber Sterling Silver Handcrafted Ring

Formed over 45 million years ago, Baltic Amber is an organic substance, a “fossil resin” produced by pine trees which grew in Northern Europe – from southern regions of the present day Scandinavia and nearby regions of the bed of the Baltic Sea. The climate became warmer and trees started to exude big amounts of resin. Scientists say that amber is a fossil pine resin from this region that has achieved a stable state through oxidation

Baltic Amber

The Baltic Region is home to the largest known deposit of amber, called Baltic Amber or succinite. ( because Baltic Amber contains about 8% succinic acid, it is also termed succinite)

Numerous extinct species of plants and animals have been discovered and scientifically described from inclusions in Baltic Amber. Baltic Amber includes the most species-rich fossil insect fauna discovered to date.

Amber has been appreciated for its color and natural beauty since Neolithic times.  Much valued from antiquity to the present as a gemstone, amber is made into a variety of decorative objects. as an ingredient in perfumes, as a healing agent in folk medicine, and for making jewelry.

As “stones” for jewelry, Amber has been used since the stone age, from 13,000 years ago and Amber ornaments have been found in  Mycenaean tombs and elsewhere across Europe. To this day it is used in the manufacture of smoking and glassblowing mouthpieces.

Beautiful for its color and texture, Amber is one of my favourite “gem” to work with. You could find some Amber jewelry also here.

This beautiful big Baltic Amber “stone” has been bought by my friend in Riga (Latvia).

You could find below some steps of the process of handcrafting her ring (all the work done in the studio using sterling silver material and soldering technique):

Baltic amber is supposed to relieve the pain when it lays against the skin during the day. As it warms with the body’s natural temperature, Baltic amber jewelry releases a very small quantity of healing oils containing succinic acid which are absorbed into the skin and bloodstream and the body gets pain relief.

Used for centuries, Baltic Amber has been used for a variety of ailments from teething pain to arthritis. Scientific research has shown that succinic acid has a very positive influence on the human body. It improves immunity and the balance of acids when absorbed into the bloodstream and soothe inflammed areas. Amber’s anti-inflammatory and therapeutic properties are recognised by allopathic medicine as a natural analgesic (pain reliever), which could help to relieve many painful conditions.
